End of COVID-19 Emergency Allotments to SNAP Households 2023 For New York

Updated: Apr 21, 2023

With the upcoming change in federal law, the SNAP Emergency Allotments in New York will come to an end following the February 2023 deposits. As a result, households currently receiving SNAP benefits will only receive one deposit in the first half of the month starting from March onwards.

It's important to note that households will no longer receive a second SNAP monthly deposit after the 15th of the month. Stay informed about changes to SNAP benefits to avoid any potential disruptions in your household's food assistance.

What are supplemental EA SNAP benefits?

Since March 2020, Congress has temporarily raised SNAP benefits due to the COVID-19 public health emergency. To support households during this challenging time, Supplemental EA SNAP benefits were issued alongside their regular monthly SNAP benefit.

This resulted in households receiving more SNAP benefits each month than they would have typically been eligible for based on their income and expenses. If you're curious to learn more about the amounts, issuance, and eligibility criteria for Supplemental EA benefits in New York State, be sure to visit their official EA SNAP webpage.

Stay informed about changes to SNAP benefits to ensure you're receiving the maximum assistance available to you during these unprecedented times.

What do I need to do?

Starting in March 2023, you can expect to continue receiving your regular monthly SNAP benefit for as long as you remain eligible.

It's important to ensure that you're receiving the right amount of assistance, which is why households that have recently experienced a loss of income or an increase in expenses such as housing costs, childcare fees, child support payments, or allowable medical expenses over $35 (for those aged 60 or older, or disabled) since their last recertification can report changes to their local district office.

By doing so, households may be eligible for an increased monthly SNAP benefit amount. Don't hesitate to contact your local district office to report any changes in your household's financial circumstances and to stay informed about SNAP benefit eligibility criteria.
